For New York workers, “state tax” is often only part of the geographic deduction. New York State withholding, New York City or Yonkers withholding where applicable, and payroll insurance charges should be reconciled as separate lines.
Revised 2026 New York State withholding tables
NYS-50-T-NYS applies January 1 through December 31, 2026 and reflects the enacted 2026 rate reductions. The calculator follows the employer methods, including recapture schedules and high-wage handling, rather than multiplying gross pay by the highest rate. IT-2104 allowances reduce state withholding independently of federal W-4 elections.
The Tax Department encourages employees who used earlier IT-2104 worksheets or additional-withholding charts to review their 2026 certificate. If your employer’s allowance count differs from the example’s zero, expect a different state line. An annual tax bracket chart by itself is not a substitute for these withholding instructions.
NYC and Yonkers use separate withholding schedules. The state result here does not automatically add those amounts or determine local residency. Enter the employer-confirmed local dollars for the check in Local tax; do not increase IT-2104 allowances to compensate for an omitted city line.
New York’s 2026 employee Paid Family Leave contribution is 0.432% of gross wages per period, capped at $411.91 annually. Employer-paid premiums, covered employment, and amounts already contributed can change the deduction. The examples exclude PFL and disability insurance; enter actual applicable amounts in Other payroll to compare a deposit.
For a covered nonexempt worker under the FLSA, weekly hours over 40 generally require at least 1.5 times the regular rate. A $30 rate with four qualifying extra hours adds $180 to a 40-hour week. Occupation-specific state rules and exemptions need separate review; a job title or salary does not resolve coverage.
New York’s employer publication expressly discusses overtime among supplemental wages. A separately identified supplemental payment can have a different withholding method from regular wages. This calculator treats the total as a regular check and does not choose a bonus or separate-overtime payroll method.

Frequently asked questions
Does the New York result include New York City tax?
No. It calculates the state withholding line only. Enter confirmed city or Yonkers dollars in Local tax and review the correct local schedule with payroll.
Why does PFL stop changing with income late in the year?
The employee contribution is subject to an annual maximum of $411.91 in 2026. The calculator does not track PFL year-to-date contributions; enter the actual current-check deduction.
Are IT-2104 allowances the same as federal dependents?
No. The state certificate and federal W-4 use different calculations. Copying a federal dollar credit into the state allowance count will produce the wrong election.
Default mode follows IRS Publication 15-T Worksheet 1A for a 2020-or-later W-4 and each supported state’s current employer formula. W-4 credits and annual adjustments affect federal withholding; state elections follow the state certificate independently.
Social Security withholds 6.2% on this check’s remaining wages under the $184,500 employer wage cap. Medicare withholds 1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages crossing the employer’s $200,000 threshold, regardless of filing status. Enter taxable wages before this paycheck in the YTD controls. Traditional retirement deferrals remain subject to FICA; qualifying cafeteria-plan health premiums are assumed FICA-exempt.
Annual projections repeat this check. The separate annual tax estimate mode retains a limited legacy liability model and uses filing-status Medicare liability thresholds; it does not represent paycheck withholding. Overtime is not automatically exempt from withholding or FICA. Use W-4 Step 4(b) for an elected overtime-related withholding deduction.

Rule set and update2026 · current 2026 payroll tables (not historical paychecks)
Regular resident wage withholding only. Not for 2019-or-earlier W-4 forms, historical pay dates, supplemental/bonus methods, multistate allocation, reciprocity, pensions, or special employer methods. State wage overrides and entered local/other payroll dollars are used as supplied, not independently verified. Each state section identifies its table and effective period. DC withholding is not verified and is unavailable rather than silently using annual brackets. Legacy annual mode omits many state adjustments and later amendments. This is a planning estimate, not tax advice or a guarantee of your employer’s exact result.
